LPG and the environment

LPG (or Autogas) is a clean, green alternative to fuel your vehicle.

It produces among the lowest of life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions of all commercially available alternative fuels for your vehicle.

Fuels produce several gases during combustion and each fuel can give off varying amounts of toxic gases.

CO – Carbon Monoxide – This can lead to circulation & respiratory problems.

Co2 – Carbon Dioxide – This is a large contributor to greenhouse gases in the environment and it is believed that this leads to climate change.

NOx – Oxides of Nitrogen – These irritate the respiratory system again and contribute to the formation of ground level ozone. This in turn increases greenhouse gases in the environment.

HC – Hydrocarbons – These also contribute to ground level ozone and can also be released when refueling vehicles. LPG systems have a sealed refueling system and so less Hydrocarbons are released.

Fine Particulate Matter – This is mainly emitted from the exhausts of diesel vehicles and it known to cause chronic respiratory problems and is thought to be carcinogenic.

LPG powered vehicles emit 90% less Particulate matter than a diesel powered equivalent vehicle.

Overall, LPG vehicles produce around 20% less ozone forming potential, between 10-15% lower greenhouse gas emissions and only 1/5 air toxics emissions.

LPG vehicles operate even cleaner than other fuelled vehicles when cold. This means that for city driving, LPG vehicles are even more kind to the environment.

Another benefit of LPG is that Australia has huge natural reserves of LPG and produces around 3 million tonnes per year. It is projected to grow to 5 million tonnes by 2021.
